“If you’re looking, you ain’t cooking.”

I live in Texas, and barbecue is native language.

The average house doesn’t have a grill on the back patio. It has a gas grill, a charcoal grill, a ceramic charcoal grill, a pellet smoker, and an offset smoker. Maybe an electric smoker too just for safety.

I’m only sorta kidding. Barbecue is pretty serious business here.

Just like any hobby, smoking meat has its own nicknames, acronyms (ever heard of SPG?), and idioms.

One of those favorites is simple: “if you’re looking, you ain’t cooking.”

What that means is the secret to letting your smoker do its thing is to keep it closed. While it’s tempting to open it up and see how things are looking, it’s best to just keep an eye on your temperature and trust the process.

That’s how you get perfect ribs, tender brisket with that excellent bark, and those oh-so-tasty burnt ends.

You can apply this to your money too.

Compounding is a super power, if you let it do its thing.

If you’re checking, obsessing, and tinkering, you won’t get the same results as set-it-and-forget it.

So don’t ruin a good investment (or brisket) by tinkering.

Just trust the process.

Onward and upward,
