Don’t be a loser.

I had a business partner that had a few catchy phrases. These always took the sting out of something that would otherwise hurt.

Author Jon Acuff calls these phrases “soundtracks”.

They’re the thing we say in our head or out loud, often on repeat, that tend to guide the way we think and feel about everything.

Some of my favorites of his:

• “Luggage grows roots”
  (put your stuff away as soon as you get home from a trip)

• “No unforced errors”
  (don’t put yourself in a bad position if you can control it)

• “Mo’ money, mo’ problems”
  (one of his “broken soundtracks” that he had believed for so long but needed to fix)

Acuff was an advertising headline writer, so this sort of thing is native language for him.

But I love when I hear catchy phrases that hold a lot of meaning, and tend to collect these phrases. There are zero rules against using someone else’s catchphrase in your daily mental routine.

Back to my business partner…

One of my favorite phrases of his is this:

"Education costs money.”

We would say it any time we had a financial loss of any size.

You can pay someone else to teach you the thing, or go out and fail on your own – either way, you’re paying for an education.

This is a mental way of immediately turning an L into a W.

In other words, it is a huge tool for positivity and mental fortitude.

I heard it put another way on the Faith Driven Entrepreneur podcast: “There are not winners and losers, only winners and learners.”

That’s just another way of saying the same thing.

If you see a financial deficit event as a loss, well then it’s a loss. If you see the same event as an education, then it’s a win. The result lies entirely within your perception – and your future success depends on whether you actually learned or not.
