Are they getting the best of you?

Your friends and family can get the best version of you when you’re not chronically stressed about the health of your business or financial life. It’s no fun being around somebody who’s always wringing hands about the next bills to pay, waiting on accounts receivable, sweating it out.

The Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts estimates that financial stress contributes to roughly 40% of U.S. divorces. That’s wild.

Healthy relationships need balance.

This doesn’t end with money, but it does begin with money.

Building margin in your business and financial life is the most useful lever you can pull in order to bring your best self into your relationships.

Work stress can bleed into every close relationship you have, from your children to your spouse and your friends. I’ve been there: thinking about an unexpected cost while playing catch with my son or wondering what we’re going to do after losing a huge client – instead of engaging in conversation with my wife or kids.

Another lever you can pull is simply to change your expectations.

I’ve shared before how full-time work could be just 15 hours a week in this age of modern convenience, but we just can’t be satisfied with living simply, can we? Charlie Munger famously said “the world is driven by envy” – causing us to creep our lifestyle up and up and up.

But here’s the good news: you can opt out any time.

There are people every day selling their homes and full-time RVing. Living in school buses. Downsizing to a 2 bedroom house on a postage stamp lot, and living debt-free. Saving like crazy and spending nothing in order to retire in their 30s or 40s. It’s very possible, and people are choosing simplicity over comfy or showy lifestyles.

The choice is yours… but remember: the biggest splash you make in life may be at work, the deepest impact you can make is at home.

Your relationships need your financial life to be healthy.

Onward and upward,
