It all started with a broom.

My first official job was sweeping our neighbor’s driveway.

I was in grade school, and he was getting old – he didn't want to do chump work any more, and offered me the opportunity of a lifetime. A “play-til-you-lose” session of Street Fighter II at the corner store in exchange for sweeping the driveway.

Well I’m skipping ahead here… what he said was “hey kid, want to make a quarter every Wednesday?” (the rest was me filling in the blanks with the possibilities that quarter held)

Usually my newly minted boss would flip me a quarter and say “don’t spend it all in one place” (even though that was exactly what destiny had in mind), but one day he altered the course of my financial curiosity by giving me an assignment: “I want you to write me a report on compound interest.”

It was summer time, and that sure sounded like homework to me, so I blew it off as long as possible. But eventually I had to acquiesce to the persistent neighborly pressure.

Here’s a summary of 4th grade version: Compound Interest makes money on your money.

When you make interest on your money, then your lump sum grows, and next time you make interest on that interest. The more frequently your interest compounds, the quicker it grows on itself.

That is how you can turn a penny into over $10 million by the end of the month, if it doubles every day.

Obviously that’s neither a realistic rate of return, nor is it a compounding rate you’re going to find on a passive investment, but it illustrates how quickly things can excel – especially in the last few days of that month.
