Debt is killing your future.

With nearly half of Americans carrying a credit card balance, and average monthly payments on cars, student loans, and credit cards topping $1,500 per month, we’re absolutely drowning in debt.

Credit card rates are north of 20% now, which means you’ll never get ahead as long as you are carrying a balance.

It’s like swimming with an anchor tied to your feet.

As long as you’re paying 20% on your debt, it doesn’t matter what rate of return you get on your investments. You’re losing.

The first step to success is getting debt free.

People get debt free every day.

If you want to get inspired, go down a rabbit hole into the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early). There are thousands of people not just kicking debt, but amassing a nest egg in their 30s, 40s, and 50s in order to take control of their future.

Or listen to Dave Ramsey’s show. He tends to be a polarizing figure, but for the life of me I don’t know why. People call in every day with praise reports that they have followed his program and are debt free, often including their mortgage. Who’s going to get offended at that?

Dave Ramsey will tell you to pay off your smallest debt first, regardless of interest rate. That doesn’t make math sense, but it does make sense for your mentality. He posits that it creates momentum, and gets you inspired.

I buy that.

The human response is called Completion Bias, and in this way you can leverage your human nature in order to get things done in your life.

Here’s the bottom line: your financial future absolutely depends on your financial independence from debt. For any debt you have, imagine a future without it, and go make that future happen.
