Why is everyone keeping it a secret?
American culture creates a strange pressure to want everything, everywhere, all at once. More, bigger, now, now, now.
Ambition is awesome, don’t get me wrong – we’ve built quite a thing here in the ol’ US of A. But on a personal level, it’s a battle against desire. Spend any amount of time on social media, and tell me you don’t have the desire for something different from what you have now.
But there’s secret resistance, and it’s name is Delayed Gratification.
Anything worth having in life requires sacrifice now for something better later. “Faster horses and older whiskey”, as the saying goes. It’s also true for six pack abs, well-disciplined kids, a nicer house, an unforgettable vacation, and a business that treats you well.
This resistance also has another name: Grit.
Grit conjures up words like perseverance, unwavering, and firmness. It’s that “no-quit” attitude that follows your commitment and fills you once you know your “why.”
Don’t take my word for it, ask The Duke:
“True grit is making a decision and standing by it, doing what must be done.”
Grit is a skill you can develop.
Follow through with your decisions. Take action, even when you don’t feel like it. Hit the gym before work. Pay cash for that next car so you can make interest, not pay interest. Take your spouse on a date to strengthen the relationship.
Practice, practice, practice… and before you know it, grit will come naturally. Well, more naturally, anyway.
