The Skill You Didn’t Know You Needed

Not all skills are tangible.
Not all skills are measurable.
In fact, some skills are neither, but you need them in order to accomplish anything you set your mind to.
Such as: action.
Having a “bias for action” can be a huge asset for making big change. One example is that a startup company challenging a deeply-rooted incumbent (see: The Innovator’s Dilemma). They may not have deep pockets, or a robust team, or a nice fat slice of market share… but they can take action and pivot quickly.
Why you suck at taking action
What is it about taking that first step that’s so mentally challenging?
My theory is that it’s all rooted in fear.
Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, of social discomfort, of the future…
Fear ➡️ Procrastination ➡️ Apathy ➡️ Excuses ➡️ Zero Action
But you can choose to ignore that fear. Replace “what if [fear]” with “what if [success]”.
Look: I’m preaching to myself here. I’m as guilty as anyone else when it comes to taking action first. I want a solid plan, a perfect strategy, a polished launch of my new effort, project, idea, product, business, whatever it may be… but most of the time, motion is the most important first step.
Take action right now.
Here’s a great way to start having a bias for action… if you have something to do – anything at all – and it you think it will take 10 minutes or less, drop what you’re doing and do it RIGHT NOW.

Seriously. Close the laptop. Put the phone up. Do it. Right now.
Having a bias for action is not a native behavior, and takes lots of practice to develop. Practice small, so that when it comes time to take action on a big move, you have built up that mental muscle.
Remember: you can only pivot when you’re in motion!
