Penny wise.

(No, not that Pennywise, nor that other Pennywise)

Penny wise, as in “Penny wise but pound foolish.” It’s a phrase that has been part of English lexicon for over 400 years.

Next year, the penny will stop being produced. This comes after a decision from above based on the fact that they cost between 3 and 4 cents each to produce, and inflation has been so out of control that they’re worth less and less every month (meanwhile, some pennies are worth more than a house).

Business are already affected by shortages. It’s just a matter of time before we start to see prices rounded up to the nearest nickel (which cost nearly 14 cents to make).

I think I’m going to miss the idioms the most.

I love all of the colorful ways to express thoughts and emotions. They make life more fun. Yes, cliches can be, well, cliche. But they’re only cliche because they’re overused. At one time every cliche was a novel, witty saying.

Here are some lines that I’ll miss hearing and saying about the penny:

  • A penny saved is a penny earned

  • Not a penny more

  • Penny pincher

  • Cost a pretty penny

  • In for a penny, in for a pound

  • Pennysaver

  • Penny wise, pound foolish

  • Penny for your thoughts

My favorite might be about someone who’s extremely frugal: “they know how to squeeze Abe Lincoln’s beard.”

I wonder, will finding a heads-up penny still be good luck, or is that gone too?

Onward and upward,
